1. Cultural contacts between Romania and the Czech lands go back to the 19th
century.The great Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu stopped in Prague in the autumn of 1869
on his way to Vienna. His most known photo was made by a famous Czech photographer - Jan
Tomas.
Jan Neruda, the well-known Czech writer, travelled to Romania and gathered impressions
in two serial story columns "The figure" and "Bucharest". "The
figure" was published in 1870 in the Prague magazine "National pages",
followed by the serial story column "Bucharest" in 1971.
Other literary writings about Romania were published in 1882 in the literary magazine
"Svetozor" by J.U.Jarnik - "Memories from my stay among the Romanians"
and Josef Stolba’s notes "Bucharest", 1901.
Romanian famous composer George Enescu visited also Prague at the invitation of his
friend Bohuslav Martinu, one of the most played Czech composer of all times.
The Czech diplomat and Romanian language translator Dobromil Pacalt brought his
contribution for spreading Romanian culture to the Czech lands by writing "Memories
from Romania".
2. Framework of cultural bilateral relations
On November 23rd 1968, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Romania and the
Government of the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia signed an Agreement for cultural
co-operation.
De facto co-operation is established by direct agreements between various cultural
institutions.
On March 26th 1971, the Convention between the Governments of the Socialist Republic of
Romania and the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia regarding the establishment of
Cultural Centers on mutual basis was signed.
The co-operation in the field of education is based on a bilateral Agreement concluded
in June 1998 and extended on April 12th 2002 for the period 2002-2005.
The Science Academies of both countries signed the Agreement and the Application Plan
for bilateral scientific co-operation on October 10th, 1996.
The Status of the Romanian-Czech Joined Commission for History was signed in January
2000.
The Protocol of Co-operation in the field of Archives was signed by correspondence in
July 2000.
