Brief history of the diplomatic relations
Romania
and former Czechoslovakia have established diplomatic relations on
April 6th 1919.
In 1939, after the split of Czechoslovakia and the installation of
the German protectorate over the nowadays territory of the Czech
Republic, the diplomatic relations between the two countries ceased
and were to be resumed on June 7th 1945.
On December 18th 1992, after the splitting of the
Czech-Slovak Federation, Romania was among the first states to
recognize the Czech Republic as a sovereign and independent state.
Characterization of bilateral relations
The
Romanian-Czech relations have a good development on the basis of the
traditional friendly terms and solidarity between the peoples of
both countries, the similarity of the fundamental options of the
foreign policies, as well as a good co-operation at bilateral and
multilateral levels.
Bilateral political dialogue
High level visits
· 21-23 June 1994 - official visit to Romania of Mr.
Vaclav Havel, President of the Czech Republic. During this visit
the Treaty concerning the relations of friendship and co-operation
between Romania and Czech Republic was concluded;
· 10-11 March 1997 - official visit to the Czech Republic of
Mr. Emil Constantinescu, President of Romania;
· June 1997 - Mr. Emil Constantinescu,
President of Romania attended a NATO workshop organized in Prague;
· 18 May 18th 2000 - Official visit to Romania of
Mr. Vaclav Havel, president of the Czech Republic;
· 6 – 8 April 2004 – Official visit to the Czech Republic of
Mr. Ion Iliescu, President of Romania. On this occasion took
place the opening of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Prague;

President of the Czech Government. On this occasion the Memorandum
regarding the Free Trade Exchanges between Romania and Czech
Republic, the Agreement for Avoiding the Double Taxation and
Prevention of Tax Evasion, as well as the Agreement regarding Mutual
Promotion and Protection of Investments were concluded;
· 11-12 September 1998 - Mr. Radu Vasile, Prime
Minister of Romania, attended the meeting of Central European Free
Trade Agreement member states in Prague; bilateral talks took place
between the Romanian and the Czech sides;
· 5-6 November 1999 - Mr. Radu Vasile, Prime Minister
of Romania, attended Central European Initiative meeting in Prague;
bilateral talks took place between the Romanian and the Czech sides;
· 18-19 March 2000 - official visit to Romania of Mr.
Milos Zeman, President of the Czech Republic Government. On this
occasion two conventions regarding the co-operation in the
veterinary medical field and in the plant quarantine and protection
field were signed;
· 8-9 October 2000 - official visit to the Czech Republic of
Mr. Mugur Isarescu, Prime Minister of Romania;
· 15-16 October - Mr. Milos Zeman,
President of the Government of the Czech Republic, attended the
meeting of the Central European Free Trade Agreement member states,
at Prime Minister level, held in Bucharest; bilateral talks took
place between the Romanian and the Czech sides;
· 25-26 March 2002 - Mr. Milos Zeman,
President of the Government of the Czech Republic, attended the
meeting of the Vilnius 10 member states, at Prime Minister level,
held in Bucharest; the Czech Prime Minister was also received by the
Romanian President;
· 15 – 16 Mars 2004 – Official visit to Romania of Mr.
Vladimir Spidla, President of the Government of the Czech
Republic. It was adopted a Joint Declaration between the Government
of Romania and the Government of the Czech Republic for
consolidating cooperation on European affairs.
